The too kind Duke, Vincentio, leaves Vienna in the hands of Angelo, a man of austere character, and Escalus, a wise counsellor. They reinstate the law against fornication on penalty of dealth and vow to make an example of young Claudio who has gotten Juliet with child. This case incites the public eye because Claudio and Juliet are truly in love and would marry if not for a difficult about the dowry. Claudio begs his sister, Isabella, who is entering the convent, to plead his case. Angelo, upon seeing Isabella, is filled with passion. He tells Isabella she may buy her brother's life with her honor. The Duke has been disguised as a friar throughout all of this. He sees and hears all and discovers that Angelo did not marry his betrothed, Mariana, when her dowry was lost at sea. In the end, the meddling Duke sets it up so that Angelo is tricked into marrying Mariana, Cladio and Juliet get married and he, himself, asks Isabella for her hand.
